Seen from Long Island, this view takes in Governors Island and the East River, with the city of New York rising on the far shore. The plate is a copy of an engraving Pierre Canot made in 1768, reissued in London in 1776 by A. Hamilton Jr. and printed in the October 1776 number of *The Town and Country Magazine*. Its appearance that year gave British readers a picture of a city that had just come under British control after the Battle of Long Island in late August 1776. Because the plate reuses an earlier design, it shows New York as it looked before the Revolution, when the harbor was busy with shipping.
