Looking across the water from the northwest corner of Fort Columbus on Governors Island, this view takes in the harbor and the growing city of New York beyond it. Fort Columbus was built on the island in the late 1700s and, under the name Fort Jay, grew into one of the key defensive works guarding the approach to Manhattan. Vantage points like this one show how the island commanded the narrow channels between the city and the open Upper Bay, the reason the British, and later American forces, held it so closely. Views such as this one were often made by artists for printed sale, so the composition also reflects how the harbor was pictured for an audience far from the water.
