Rather than showing the island itself, this lithograph offers a sweeping bird's-eye view of the city, with the word NEW YORK lettered across the sheet. Printmakers of the 19th century often drew cities from a high oblique angle so viewers could take in streets, rivers and harbor shipping at a glance. Governors Island, a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan, sat within that same busy harbor and served as a military post for generations before it became a national monument in 2016.
