A bird's-eye view of New York and Brooklyn shows the two cities as they looked from a high, imagined vantage point over the harbor, a style that was popular in the nineteenth century, when printmakers drew panoramas of growing cities before aerial photography existed. The island now part of Governors Island National Monument sits in the upper bay, and its fortifications and military buildings reflect its long use as an army post, beginning after the British evacuation of New York in 1783. Such views were valued both as maps of a rapidly expanding waterfront and as records of how the harbor and its islands were built up over time.
