Castle Clinton, the round sandstone fort on the Battery at the foot of Manhattan, is the vantage point this view is built around, and the Brooklyn Bridge rises beyond it as the picture's second anchor. The fort was completed in 1811 as a harbor defense and later served as an immigrant landing depot, a concert hall and an aquarium before becoming a national monument. The bridge, opened in 1883, was then the longest suspension span in the world, so pairing it with the old fortification sets two eras of New York's waterfront side by side.
