The view is taken from the Battery, the southern tip of Manhattan, and looks out over the harbor toward the south, so the viewer sits high above the waterfront as if hovering over the ships. Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for popular lithographs, issued this color print in 1892, at a time when the port was the busiest in the country and steamships, ferries and sailing vessels crowded its waters. Bird's-eye views like this one were prized by a public eager to see the city's growing commerce laid out at once. The print is catalogued in the firm's raisonné, where it sits among many similar harbor scenes from the period.
