The view looks south from the Battery, the tip of Manhattan, so the harbor opens out below the viewer in a sweeping bird's-eye perspective. Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for popular lithographs, published the print in 1892, when the port was among the busiest in the world and steamers, sailing ships and ferries crowded the water between Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Bird's-eye views like this one were a fashionable genre in the 1890s, prized for packing a whole waterfront into a single sheet. Look closely at the harbor traffic and the dense city edge, which show how the lower end of Manhattan worked as the gateway for immigrants and goods arriving from across the Atlantic.
