Taken from the south, this view sets the statue against the open water of New York Harbor rather than from its base on Liberty Island, so the figure reads as a landmark rising from the bay. The print is credited to S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York, and its date of about 1891 comes from a caption card that has not been independently verified. The statue had been dedicated in October 1886 as a gift from France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, so by the time this print was made it was already a familiar sight to ferry passengers and harbor travelers.
