Few harbor views from the early 1890s show the statue as plainly as this one, with the figure rising above the water as the first thing a ship's passengers would have seen. The statue, a gift from the people of France, had been dedicated in October 1886, and by about 1891 it was already a fixture of New York Harbor. This print is a photoprint copyrighted by N.L. Stebbins, and its c1891 date comes from an unverified caption card, so it is best read as approximate. Souvenir views like this one were a common way for visitors to remember the city's new landmark.
