Here the statue shares the frame with New York Harbor, so the view places the monument within its waterfront setting rather than isolating it. The record dates the print to about 1914, nearly three decades after the statue's dedication in 1886, when France's gift had become one of the city's best-known sights and a common subject for photographers working in the harbor. The caption information came from a card that has not been independently verified, so the exact photographer and circumstances are uncertain. Still, the image shows how the harbor's shipping and skyline framed visitors' first sight of the statue, a view that many arriving immigrants would have known well.
