Taken from the north, this view sets the statue against the open water of New York Harbor, showing its full height above the pedestal. The print is a photoprint issued by S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York, a photographer who sold views to a wide public. Its caption card dates it to about 1891, though that date is unverified. By then the statue, a gift from the people of France designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, had stood on Liberty Island since its dedication in 1886, and it was already becoming one of the country's best-known sights.
