The Statue of Liberty stands at the center of this c1906 photoprint, a view that pairs the monument with the wider sweep of New York Harbor. The print was issued by Irving Underhill of New York, a publisher of souvenir views who sold inexpensive images of the city's sights to visitors and residents alike. The statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, had by this time become one of the most recognizable symbols of the nation and the first sight of America for many immigrants arriving by ship. Its catalog number, B-10170, places it among the publisher's black-and-white harbor pictures, and the caption information was recorded from the original card and not independently verified.
