Long before the statue stood on Bedloe's Island, readers of Scribner's in June 1877 could see an engraving of how it was expected to look in the harbor, based on a sketch by its sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The project was still a plan then, with the copper figure unfinished and the gift from France not dedicated until 1886. The engraving is worth noticing as a picture of intention, showing a proposed landmark set into the harbor scene before it was built.
