The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and this c1901 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of scenic photographs and hand-colored prints of American places around the turn of the 20th century. The statue, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated in 1886 and had by 1901 become one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, greeting ships and immigrants arriving by sea. Its copper skin had already weathered to the green patina seen today, and the photographs of this era help document how visitors first encountered the monument from the water.
