Few American landmarks appear on stereo cards as often as the Statue of Liberty, and this example shows it rising over New York Harbor, where it greeted ships arriving from abroad. Keystone View Company, a Meadville, Pennsylvania firm, produced stereographs like this in great numbers, and the two nearly identical images on the card gave viewers a three-dimensional look at the statue when seen through a stereoscope. France gave the statue to the United States, and it was dedicated in 1886. By the 1920s it had become a settled symbol of the nation, and the date given here, c1923, comes from the original caption card and is approximate.
