This 1890 photographic print shows the statue under its formal title, *Liberty Enlightening the World*, as it stood in the harbor four years after its dedication in October 1886. The copper figure was a gift from the people of France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its iron internal framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. Its copyright credit to S.R. Stoddard points to the Glens Falls, New York, photographer better known for his views of the Adirondacks and his stereographs. By 1890 the statue had become one of the most recognizable sights in New York Harbor, and photographs like this one helped spread its image across the country.
