Three separate illustrations share this sheet from the June 13, 1885, issue of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper*: the Paris presentation of the statue on July 4, 1884, a portrait of sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, and a sectional view of the iron core and bracing. The cutaway is the most instructive, since it shows the internal framework, engineered by Gustave Eiffel, that held the thin copper skin in shape. Paris displayed the figure before it was dismantled and shipped to New York, and these engravings gave American readers a close look at how it was built.
