The Great Bartholdi Statue, as it was titled in its original French-to-English presentation, is the colossal copper figure of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and a tablet inscribed with the date of American independence in her left. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, a gift from the people of France to the United States, and it was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886. Its copper skin, which has weathered over the decades to the green patina familiar today, is worth a close look, since the figure was assembled from thin sheets riveted to an iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel's company.
