Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's statue, formally titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," shows a robed woman raising a torch in her right hand and holding a tablet inscribed with the date of American independence in her left. The sculptor designed the figure in France, where it was built in sections of hammered copper over an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. Gifted by the French people to the United States to mark the centenary of independence, the statue was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886 and has since become one of the most recognized symbols of the nation.
