Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, formally titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. France gave the statue to the United States as a gift marking the friendship between the two nations and the centenary of the Declaration of Independence. Its copper skin, shaped over an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm, was assembled in France before being shipped across the Atlantic. Dedicated in 1886, the statue quickly became a symbol of welcome for millions of immigrants arriving by sea.
