The Great Bartholdi Statue, as it was originally titled, is the work that became known as Liberty Enlightening the World, a copper-skinned figure of a robed woman raising a torch above New York Harbor. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and it was a gift from the people of France to the United States, meant to mark the friendship between the two nations and the ideals of the American Revolution. The statue was dedicated on Bedloe's Island, now Liberty Island, in 1886, and its copper skin, which has weathered to the green patina seen today, is worth noticing when comparing color images of the monument.
