This color lithograph presents the Bartholdi colossal statue as "The gift of France to the American people," a title that frames the monument as a diplomatic offering before it stood in New York Harbor. The statue was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and when this print appeared around 1884, the figure was still being built in France, with its fundraising for the New York pedestal still underway. Printed by the Shugg Brothers and designed by R. Schwarz, the piece reflects the public enthusiasm for the project, which was dedicated in October 1886.
