Lady Liberty's full name, "Liberty Enlightening the World," is a reminder that the statue began as a gift of friendship from the French people to the United States, and this picture captures the monument as it was first seen by the public. Designed by the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, the statue was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886 after years of fundraising on both sides of the Atlantic. The copper skin has since weathered from bright penny brown to the green patina visitors know today, and the color image helps show that transformation and the scale of the statue against the harbor.
