Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's sculpture carries the title *Liberty Enlightening the World*, a name that hints at how its maker meant it to be read. France gave it to the United States as a gift marking the friendship between the two nations and the centennial of American independence, and it was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886. Its copper skin rests on an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm, and the metal weathered to the green patina seen today. Over time its meaning shifted from a tribute to republican ideals to a familiar sight for immigrants arriving by ship.
