Children from Britain leaning toward the rail as their ship approaches the Statue of Liberty set this picture apart from the many harbor views on this board. The caption card dates it tentatively to around 1944, when families in Britain were still sending children overseas to escape the bombing. Earlier evacuation schemes had carried thousands of British children across the Atlantic until the 1940 sinking of the liner City of Benares largely halted them. Arriving under the statue's torch gave these young travelers a powerful symbol of refuge.
