New York in 1877 was a crowded port growing toward a million residents, and this bird's-eye view shows Manhattan's street grid stretching north past Central Park. In March, Rutherford B. Hayes took the presidential oath after the disputed election of 1876, ending a contest that had kept New Yorkers watching the returns for months. That summer a railroad strike spread through cities across the Northeast and Midwest, and the city's dependence on rail freight and the piers made the unrest a concern on the docks and in the counting houses. Work on the Brooklyn Bridge, begun in 1869, was still rising over the East River, a reminder that Manhattan's future depended on crossings to its neighbors.
