New York in 1876 was preparing to mark the nation's hundredth birthday, and the city's streets and waterfront were full of the bustle of that summer. Governor Samuel J. Tilden, who had helped break the Tweed Ring's hold on city finances and won the state house in 1874, was the Democrats' candidate for president, and the disputed November vote kept New Yorkers following the returns for weeks. Ships at the East and Hudson piers still handled a large share of the nation's foreign and coastal trade, and the avenues and cross streets shown on the map ran north past Central Park toward Harlem. For residents, the city was a port, a political battleground and a place where the growth of the past decade was plain to see.
