New York in 1870 held roughly 942,000 people, and the city was spreading north beyond the old street grid, with the Ninth Avenue elevated railway carrying passengers above the traffic. Work had only recently started on the Brooklyn Bridge across the East River, linking Manhattan to the separate city of Brooklyn. Central Park, laid out in the 1850s, had matured into a green refuge for a crowded city whose garment shops, printing houses and piers ran day and night. That April the Metropolitan Museum of Art was chartered, a sign that the city's wealthy merchants wanted New York to rival London and Paris in culture as well as trade.
