Mount Morris is a village on the Genesee River in Livingston County, western New York, and in 1893 its economy rested on the farms around it. Wheat, dairy products, and orchard fruit moved out through local shipping points, and the Erie Railroad's line through the valley linked the village to Rochester and to markets farther east. Residents knew Mount Morris as a town of small mills, churches, and commercial blocks, and as a gateway to the falls and gorges a few miles upstream. Civic life centered on town government and local schools, and the scenic Genesee gorge already drew visitors, years before the land there was set aside as Letchworth State Park.
