Millerton, in the Harlem Valley of northeastern Dutchess County, New York, was a small village in 1887 whose growth rested largely on the railroad and on iron. The Harlem Railroad had served the valley since the early 1850s, carrying passengers and freight, and nearby iron ore workings gave local men steady wages. Farms in the surrounding towns shipped dairy goods, grain and produce through the depot, while the village's stores, churches and lodges served a population of farmers, mill hands and railroad workers. For residents, Millerton was first a rail stop and market center in a county where farming and small industry set the pace of daily life.
