Keeseville, New York, in 1887 was a mill village in northern Essex County, set along the Ausable River a short distance from Lake Champlain. Its economy rested on water power from the river's falls, which turned the wheels of textile, iron, and other manufacturing works that employed much of the local population. Visitors also came to the nearby Ausable Chasm, whose gorge had drawn sightseers from across the region for decades and gave the village a steady trade in lodging and carriage traffic. The bird's-eye view shows a compact village of streets, churches, and factory buildings pressed between the river and the surrounding hills.
