Deposit, in Broome County on the Delaware River near the Pennsylvania line, was a railroad and lumber village in 1887. The Erie Railroad's main line ran through the valley and made the village a shipping point for the surrounding hills, where sawmills and tanneries drew on the hemlock forests for lumber and bark. Rafting and river trade on the Delaware had shaped the local economy for decades, and by the late 1880s the rail line carried most of its freight and passengers. Residents of the village would have known it as a busy stop on the Erie, set between the river flats and the steep wooded slopes.
