Delhi, the county seat of Delaware County in the western Catskills, was a farm town in 1887, and its fortunes rested largely on dairying. Milk, cheese, and butter from the surrounding valleys moved by wagon and rail toward New York City markets, and the railroad serving the village carried much of that trade. Its streets held churches, a courthouse, shops, and an academy that drew students from the hill towns. Residents would have known Delhi as a prosperous center of upland dairy country, with daily life set by the milk schedule and the seasons rather than by manufacturing.
