Ellenville, in Ulster County, New York, was a village of tanneries, mineral springs, and mountain resorts in 1887. Its tanning works drew on the hemlock forests of the surrounding Shawangunk Mountains, and the bark and leather trade gave many local families their living. The village also drew summer visitors from New York City and other towns, who came for the mineral waters and the cool air of the uplands. The railroad through the Wallkill Valley linked Ellenville to the wider region, carrying both goods and the seasonal crowds that kept its hotels and boarding houses busy.
