Frankfort, New York, in 1887 was a village on the Mohawk River in Herkimer County, set in a valley that had long depended on water and rail for its livelihood. The Erie Canal and the New York Central main line ran along the river corridor, carrying grain, dairy goods, and manufactured wares east and west, so the canal towpath and the tracks shaped where people lived and worked. Just down the valley, the Remington arms works in Ilion had become one of the region's best-known manufacturers, and many residents of neighboring communities found employment in its shops or in the mills and trades that served them. Village life in the 1880s centered on churches, schools, and local lodges, and the bird's-eye view shows a community whose streets, rooftops, and river crossings reflected a town that was tied closely to the valley's commerce.
