Middletown, in Orange County, New York, was a railroad town in 1887, shaped by the Erie Railroad, whose main line had passed through the village since the 1840s. The tracks and depot drew freight, passengers, and commerce, and the surrounding farms of the Wallkill Valley and the hills to the west sent produce and dairy goods to market. Local businesses, churches, schools, and fraternal lodges gave the village its civic life, and residents who looked at a view like this one would have recognized it as a place defined by its trains and its farmland. Growth in the 1880s brought new houses and streets onto the slopes above the depot, reflecting a community that was steadily expanding beyond its older core.
