Middletown, in Orange County, New York, was in 1922 a small city still organized around the Erie Railroad, whose trains carried passengers, coal, and freight through the valley toward New York City and the Midwest. The surrounding Hudson Valley farms supplied fresh milk, produce, and poultry to urban markets, so the town's commerce moved on the same schedules as its rail traffic. Life in the early 1920s also reflected national changes: automobiles were becoming common on the streets, and Prohibition, in force since 1920, shaped local debates over saloons and social clubs. Residents looking down on their town from a height like this would have seen a place balanced between an older rail-and-farm economy and the newer pace of motor travel.
