Queens in 1922 was a borough of New York City only about two decades old, having joined Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island in the 1898 consolidation. Its population was climbing quickly, and farmland around Flushing, Jamaica and Richmond Hill was giving way to rows of houses and apartment blocks. The factories of Long Island City and Astoria drew workers across the East River, while the Queensboro Bridge, opened in 1909, and Long Island Rail Road lines through Jamaica and Woodside tied the borough to Manhattan's offices and shops. Residents would have known it for its working-class neighborhoods, truck farms and growing commuter population.
