Queens in 1918 was a borough of New York City where the western waterfront had become industrial while the eastern towns still kept much of their rural character. Long Island City and Astoria held a dense belt of factories, and Astoria's Steinway piano works was among the best-known manufacturers in the borough. Pennsylvania Railroad yards at Sunnyside, along with Long Island Rail Road lines through Jamaica and Flushing, moved freight and commuters alike. The war shaped daily life, as Liberty Loan drives sought local subscriptions, and by autumn the influenza epidemic had closed schools and cancelled gatherings across the city before the Armistice in November brought celebrations to the streets.
