Rhinebeck, New York, in 1890 was a Dutchess County village of farms, orchards, and country estates on the east bank of the Hudson River, about a hundred miles north of New York City. Its economy rested on dairying, fruit, and the trade that moved through the river landings at nearby Rhinecliff, where the Hudson River Railroad and the passenger steamboats met the traffic from the countryside. Wealthy families from the city had built large houses on the surrounding hills, and their presence shaped village life through churches, shops, and seasonal visitors. Residents of the period would have known the place as a quiet river town tied to both the farm economy and the busy Hudson corridor beside it.
