Stamford, New York, in Delaware County, sat in the western Catskills in 1890, a village whose fortunes rested on the land around it. Dairy farming and the hemlock bark tanning trade drew on the surrounding forests, and the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, which ran through the valley, carried milk, bark, lumber, and produce out to larger markets. The same line brought summer boarders from New York City, so the village's hotels and boarding houses gave it a seasonal rhythm alongside its farm work. Residents in this bird's-eye view would have known Stamford as a mountain stop on the railroad, a place of churches, schools, and village streets set against the wooded ridges. The decade was one of steady, modest growth rather than boom, and the village's daily life followed the seasons of the farm and the timetable of the train.
