Newport, in Herkimer County, New York, was a small village in 1890, set in the Mohawk Valley region where farming and water-powered mills shaped daily life. West Canada Creek and its tributaries turned the wheels of local sawmills and grist mills, and surrounding farms sent dairy products, grain, and timber to market in nearby towns. The wider valley was tied to the Erie Canal and the New York Central main line, which carried freight and passengers east and west and kept the region connected to Albany, Utica, and beyond. Residents in 1890 would have known Newport as a quiet community of churches, schools, and village stores, where life followed the seasons of planting, haying, and harvest.
