St. Johnsville sits on the Mohawk River in Montgomery County, New York, and in 1890 it was a small manufacturing village in the middle of the Mohawk Valley. The New York Central's main line ran along the valley, so farm goods, dairy products, and finished textiles could move east to Albany and beyond. Knitting and textile work gave many local families steady wages, while the surrounding hillside farms supplied milk, grain, and livestock to the village markets. In a bird's-eye view of this kind, the viewer would have seen the river flats, the rail corridor, and the streets and church spires that residents recognized as their own town.
