Poland, in Herkimer County, New York, was a rural village in 1890, set among the farms and wooded hills north of the Mohawk Valley. Its economy rested on agriculture, especially dairy farming, with local milk and butter sold to markets served by the region's rail lines and the nearby Erie Canal corridor. The village's best-known institution was the Poland Union Seminary, a private academy that drew students from surrounding towns and gave the community a reputation for schooling. Residents of the 1890s would have known Poland as a quiet place of churches, general stores, and seasonal work on the land, its life shaped by the rhythms of planting, haying, and winter. This bird's-eye view shows the village as its own people saw it, with its streets, houses, and fields laid out in a single sweeping look.
