Middleville, in Herkimer County in the central part of New York State, was a small rural village in 1890, set among dairy farms and woodlots in the hills near West Canada Creek. Like much of the upstate countryside, its economy rested on farming, with milk and cheese moving out by wagon and by rail to larger markets along the Mohawk Valley. The region's main rail line, the New York Central, ran through the valley and tied scattered villages like this one to Utica, Albany, and points west. Residents in 1890 would have known Middleville as a place of churches, a few stores, and a close-knit community, where the seasons set the pace of work. The bird's-eye view shows the village laid out as its people saw it, with its streets, houses, and church spires arranged around the creek.
