Hunter, in the Town of Hunter in Greene County, New York, was a small Catskill Mountains village in 1890, when Lewis R. Burleigh's bird's-eye view presented it to the public. The local economy rested on farming in the valley and on the hemlock bark and timber cut from the surrounding slopes, which fed the region's tanning and lumber trade. Summer visitors from New York City and elsewhere were becoming a growing part of village life, and farmhouses and boardinghouses took in guests seeking cooler air. The Stony Clove and Catskill Mountain Railroad had brought rail service into the Catskills in the early 1880s, linking mountain villages like Hunter to the wider world and making the trip to the resort hills far easier.
