Dolgeville, in Herkimer County, New York, was in 1890 a mill village built around the felt works of Alfred Dolge, a German-born manufacturer who made felts and related materials for piano makers. The company drew on the water power of West Canada Creek, and the factories gave work to a large share of the village's residents, who lived in company-built housing grouped near the mills. Dolge was known for providing more than wages, and his interest in schools, churches, and a public library shaped daily life in the village. Residents of the Mohawk Valley would have known Dolgeville first as a place of piano felt production, a manufacturing town set in a farming and dairy region.
