Ballston Spa, a village in Saratoga County, New York, was already known in 1890 for the mineral springs that had drawn visitors since the eighteenth century. The surrounding farms supplied dairy, grain, and produce, while mills along the Kayaderosseras Creek turned local water power into everyday industry. Because the village sat only a short distance from the larger resort town of Saratoga Springs, many residents earned their living from the summer trade, from hotels and boarding houses, and from bottling and selling spring water. This bird's-eye view shows the village as its own community, with its streets, churches, and commercial blocks, at a time when the county seat was a busy center of local government and trade.
