Cazenovia, a village in Madison County in central New York, sat on the north shore of Cazenovia Lake in 1890, a resort and farm-trade town of a few thousand residents. Its economy rested on dairy and agriculture from the surrounding hill farms, along with local mills and trade that moved through the railroad lines nearby. The lake drew summer visitors from Syracuse and other cities, and grand hotels and cottages lined its shore, so the village had a seasonal rhythm that mixed farm families with vacationers. Local civic life centered on churches, schools, and the village institutions that had grown up around the early nineteenth-century settlement. Residents of the era would have known Cazenovia as a quiet lakeside community tied closely to the farms and resort trade of Madison County.
