Hunter, a village in the Catskill Mountains of Greene County, New York, was in 1890 a small community that lived on hemlock bark tanning, sawn lumber, and the summer visitors who came up from the Hudson Valley and New York City to escape the heat. Tanneries drew on the surrounding hemlock forests, which had been cut heavily over the preceding decades, so the local economy rose and fell with the timber and bark trade. The mountain air and scenery made boarding houses and hotels an important source of income each summer, and village life revolved around these seasonal crowds as much as around the mills. Residents of the 1890s would have known Hunter chiefly as a gateway to the high peaks, with Hunter Mountain rising just to the south, rather than as a manufacturing town.
